St. Truiden v Sporting Charleroi – Fri 28th Jan 19:45 GMT – LB

If Charleroi have any aspirations of making the Championship Playoffs then a win here is a must. Les Zèbres have gone through something of a wobble since Christmas (W0 D2 L2) and really need to get back to winning ways if they are to close the gap on 4th place Anderlecht. If they can regain anything of their early season form then they should be more than capable of picking up the three points in the“Stayen”.

St. Truiden are enjoying something of a purple patch, at least by their own lowly standards. A run of five straight losses just before Christmas saw the team from Limburg get dragged into a relegation battle. However, since then they have picked up 7 points (W2 D1 L1) with their only reversal coming at the hands of Club Brugge.

The bookies have made the away side slight favorites at 7/5 and I think that is decent value. Despite the contrasting form, Charleroi are a much better outfit than their hosts here and I expect them to get back on track. However, over 2.5 goals at 20/23 is the safer play. De Kanaries have kept just one clean sheet at home all season and nine of their 12 games at this ground have seen at least three goals. Charleroi are averaging over 2 goals per game on the road and 11 of their 12 away games have gone above the 2.5 mark.

Trofense v Benfica II – Fri 28th Jan 20:15 GMT – Slatts

With my Benfica pick coming up a just short last week, I’m hoping the reserves side can do the business this Friday night.

Trofense are in 14th place in the Segunda Liga, a comfortable 7 points above relegation, but don’t have a whole lot else to be pleased about. They come into this game with a draw and 3 defeats in their last 4 games. At home they have lost 4 of their last 6, with the two favourable results coming against teams below them in the table.

Benfica II are currently top of the table, but just 3 points above both second and third, so fixtures like this are must-wins if they are to push for the title this season. They have the best away record in the league, winning 5 of their last 6 road games, only losing to 3rd place Feirense.

I’m surprised to see the away win above even money here, given the stats and form. Benfica II are priced at 6/5 for the win, but my pick here for the Live Action Acca is for Benfica to win and over 1.5 match goals at 15/8. The last 4 occasions these sides met Benfica won and there were at least 2 goals in each of those games. I don’t see any reason for this pattern to end and at odds of nearly 2/1 it looks great value.

Valladolid v Sporting Gijon – Fri 28th Jan 19:45 GMT – PK

Valladolid come into this boasting the best home record in the Segunda Division. The Albivioletas have won their last 8 consecutive home games, turning the Estadio José Zorrilla into a fortress. Even more impressively, they have only conceded 6 goals across all 12 home league games this season.

Gijon are no mugs and are comfortably mid-table. However, their away record isn’t all that strong (W2 D5 L5). They have especially struggled against strong defensive units, picking up 8 of the available 30 points against the teams in the top half of the table.

Add in the fact that Valladolid have won the last 4 head-to-heads against Gijon and I can see another solid home win here to keep the push for promotion going. Ten of Valladolid’s 13 wins have seen them keep clean sheets and another shutout would be no surprise here.

SRD Selections:

St. Truiden v Sporting Charleroi Over 2.5 goals @ 20/23

Benfica to Win & O1.5 Goals @ 15/8

Valladolid to Win To Nil @ 7/5

The above in a treble at a little under 12/1

The Kicker

Our expert on all things EFL is not with us this week but is in red hot form after landing a huge upset on last week’s stream. Not many people gave Norwich a shot but Gaz not only tipped the win but the goals too at 11/2. This week he sees the spoils being shared in the Championship as Stoke make the short trip north to Huddersfield. The Potters badly need a result having lost four of their last 5 league games and Gaz thinks they will nab a point. Huddersfield are in great form but the results alone do not tell the whole story. Adding Huddersfield v Stoke to end in a draw at 2/1 boosts the Live Action Acca to a massive 38/1!
