EFL Tips: Three To Follow On Boxing Day
Gaz takes a look at a limited English Football League schedule but has found value in this 19/1 treble.
English Football League fixtures on Boxing Day (St. Stephens’ Day for the Irish reading) are normally my favourite schedule of games all season. Unfortunately COVID-19 has caused havoc this year and many games have been postponed. There’s still a bit of value about though and this 19/1 treble looks tasty to me.
Middlesbrough v Nottingham Forest – Sun 26th Dec 15:00 GMT
Forest have been a regular pick of late, most recently last week when getting the job done (again). Regular readers will have heard me harping on about the Tricky Trees great run of form that has seen them lose just one of their last sixteen (W9, D6, L1). That run includes three wins on the spin and has seen them shoot up the table moving from relegation contenders to promotion candidates.
Middlesbrough won’t be pushovers and have been in decent form themselves. Boro’ are unbeaten in their last four (W3, D1, L0) including a victory over Bournemouth last weekend. Even taking that run into account I still think there’s lots of value in the 27/10 available for an away victory here.
Hull v Blackburn – Sun 26th Dec 15:00 GMT
This is another fixture where both teams are on pretty impressive runs. Hull suffered their first defeat in seven games when losing to Forest last weekend (W4, D2, L1). The Tigers’ may have lost but they did come away with credit and they won’t be easily defeated. That said they do face a major challenge in this one up against a Blackburn side that have been on a real charge recently.
Rovers have only lost one of their last 10 (W8, D1, L1), including winning five in a row, and are now very much in the title race. Those stats would normally be enough to take a chance on an away victory but there’s even more impressive stats within that run. In their last five matches Rovers have not conceded a single goal but have netted on twelve occasions themselves. Hull’s recent form is noted but the 7/5 for a Blackburn win looks the value bet in this one.
Fleetwood Town v Shrewsbury – Sun 26th Dec 15:00 GMT
Fleetwood (18th) versus Shrewsbury (20th) won’t be on many people’s watchlist but I think this could be a really good game. Both sides are better than their records thus far suggest and it should be an entertaining encounter. Shrewsbury’s problem has been their away form, failing to pick up a victory in their eleven games on the road. More concerning than the lack of victories is the fact the Shrews have lost nine of those fixtures (W0, D2, L9). It’s hard to have faith in those statistics, even if their home form has been impressive.
Fleetwood have had a disaster of a season so far but they are showing signs of turning the corner. The Cod Army are unbeaten in their last three games (W2, D1, L0) with both wins coming at Highbury Stadium. They are 13/10 to continue that good run and that’s enough to tempt me.
Middlesbrough v Nottingham Forest – Forest Win (27/10)
Hull v Blackburn – Blackburn Win (7/5)
Fleetwood Town v Shrewsbury – Fleetwood Town Win (13/10)
