EFL Tips: Collect Cash With Classy Cottagers
After a near miss last week Gaz is back with this 27/1 acca for Saturday's English Football League action.
I have to admit I’m still not over the fact that last week’s bet did not land. Both QPR and Exeter got the job done but unfortunately Sutton could not follow suit, eventually sharing the spoils in a six goal thriller. Lets hope for a change of fortune with this tasty accumulator.
Swindon v Bristol Rovers – Sat 2nd Jan 13:00 GMT
The first thing to mention here is beware the early kick-off. This is a massive game for Swindon (5th) who are still very much in the battle for automatic promotion from League 2. The big problem for The Robins has been their home form (W3 D5 L3) and they really need that to improve as soon as possible. This could be an ideal opportunity as they welcome Bristol Rovers (16th) to the County Ground. The Pirates have the opposite problem to Swindon in that they are a very solid team at home but struggle on the road (W2 D4 L4). Given what’s at stake for the home side I think they’ll be all out for 3 points and at 19/20 look a decent bet.
Stoke City v Fulham – Sat 22nd Jan 15:00 GMT
This looks like the tie of the weekend in the Championship. Stoke (8th) have been ultra consistent so far this season and are still in with a chance of bagging a playoff spot. This would be a real achievement for Michael O’Neill’s men. If they are to extend their season with a playoff run The Potters will need to halt their recent dip in home form. The bet365 stadium had been a fortress for Stoke but they have now lost three of their last four league matches at that venue. With that in mind they could really have done without a visit from table toppers Fulham.
The Cottagers have been in blistering form since the turn of the year. They’ve played three matches in the league picking up 9 points. I say wins but they were more like demolition jobs. A 0-7 away victory over Reading was followed up by back-to-back 6-2 wins at Craven Cottage against Bristol City and Birmingham. It has to be mentioned that all three of those sides are in the bottom half of the table however it’s still a majorly impressive run. They are now five points clear at the top and if their recent form continues they could open up an unassailable lead.
Given Fulham’s form I’m surprised to see bookmakers offering close to evens (20/23) for an away win. I respect Stoke but when on song this Fulham side are far superior to most teams in the league. I’m backing Fulham win and both teams to score at 11/4 in a game that should be a really entertaining watch.
Scunthorpe v Newport County – Sat 22nd Jan 15:00 GMT
Scunthorpe (23rd) featured in last weeks bet and were comfortably beaten by Exeter as expected. Unfortunately, I do not see things getting much better on Saturday. It’s now three straight defeats for The Irons and they have only won once in their last eleven league matches (W1 D5 L5). That solitary victory came over fellow strugglers Oldham and overall the future looks bleak for the men from Humberside.
Newport (6th) come into this match off the back of a confidence boosting 4-0 win over Harrogate last weekend. They are draw specialists away from Rodney Parade (drawing 3 of the last 4) but this looks like a good opportunity to get back on track. The race for the playoffs is extremely tight and The Exiles can’t afford any slip ups. An away win at 10/11 is the bet here.
Forest Green v Carlisle – Sat 22nd Jan 15:00 GMT
Leaders Forest Green come into this match as strong favourites and it’s not difficult to see why. Rovers have been dominant all season losing just two of their twenty-four league matches (W15 D7 L2). They are currently seven points clear at the top and have a game in hand over most of the chasing pack. Their last defeat in the league came all the way back on October 9th and it is hard to see them losing this one.
Carlisle (19th) have struggled on the road winning on just three occasions (W3 D2 L7). A particular negative for The Blues has been goal scoring, netting just ten goals in those matches (average 0.83 GPG). That stat makes a Forest Green win to nil at 8/5 look very appealing. My preference though is for a safer play, Forest Green and over 1.5 goals at Evens.
Swindon v Bristol Rovers – Swindon Win (19/20)
Stoke City v Fulham – Fulham Win & BTTS (11/4)
Scunthorpe v Newport County – Newport Country Win (10/11)
Forest Green v Carlisle – Forest Green & Over 1.5 Goals
