EFL Tips: Battle Of The BoyleSports Blues
It's time for another full mid-week EFL slate of games with the pick of the matches being the BoyleSports derby between Coventry and Birmingham.
Most people might be gearing up for the mid-week slate of Champions League action but that’s not how I roll. There’s a full schedule of English Football League fixtures and they have my full focus. It’s a big week from a betting perspective (with NFL Thanksgiving) so let’s start with a bang!
Colchester v Exeter – Tue 23rd Nov 19:45 GMT
Exeter (2nd) feature in this column on a relatively regular basis and once again they look like a standout bet. Impressively the Grecians are now on a 19 game unbeaten run (all competitions), you need to go back to mid-August to find their only defeat of the season. Earlier in the season they went through a spell of drawing too many games but they’ve turned that around recently. They’ve now won 5 on the spin in the league and it’s hard to see them losing on Tuesday.
Colchester (20th) have been poor for most of the season and are now very much in a relegation battle. The U’s have a half decent squad but they’ve struggled to score goals. In their 16 league matches thus far they’ve only netted on 12 occasions. The U’s have only won one of their last 5 games and that came against Scunthorpe who are rooted to the bottom of the table, not exactly ideal form heading into a clash against one of League Two’s best sides. An Exeter win at 11/10 is a confident selection in this one.
Forest Green v Barrow – Tue 23rd Nov 19:45 GMT
This is another tie where a highly ranked team looks to be mispriced versus some lowly opposition. Forest Green (1st) have been impressive this season and have been at the top of the tree since Week 2. Rovers have been particularly impressive on the road and have yet to lose away from The New Lawn. They featured in last Saturday’s bet, however on that occasion I’d tipped both teams to score. Hartlepool were the opposition that and prior to Saturday they had a great home record. Rovers made a mockery of that and came out 1-3 winners. Back at home against a Barrow (19th) side that struggle away from home, there’s only one bet that makes sense. Forest Green win at 3/4 needs to be included.
Coventry v Birmingham – Tue 23rd Nov 19:45 GMT
The BoyleSports derby looks like a cracking game. Both of these sides play decent football and are very attack minded. Birmingham have been Jekyll and Hyde this season. Their results have been fairly streaky with runs of wins followed by runs of defeats. On their day they have the ability to put it up to any team in the Championship and Lee Bowyer is a manager I really rate. That said, they’re on one of their losing streaks (lost back to back games) and face a tough task here.
Coventry have only lost once at home in the league and will fancy their chance of getting all 3 points in this one. The Sky Blues have been scoring for fun for the majority of the season and I think that’s the key. This match could turn into a high scoring affair and in fixtures like that I like having an explosive team on my side.
Morecambe v Charlton – Tue 23rd Nov 19:45 GMT
Charlton’s form since sacking Nigel Adkins has been exceptional. The Addicks are unbeaten in the league since then winning four of their five games. Most impressive of those victories was Saturday dismissal of table-toppers Plymouth. Given their form it’s strange that Johnnie Jackson hasn’t been appointed manager on a permanent basis. There’s rumours swirling that Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is after the job, which I hope doesn’t bring uncertainty as I’m backing the Londoners here. Morecambe picked up their first win in seven league games on Saturday but that was against a Fleetwood side who are also struggling for form. An away win looks a solid bet at 21/20.
Colchester v Exeter – Exeter Win (21/20)
Forest Green v Barrow – Forest Green Win (7/10)
Coventry v Birmingham – Coventry Win (5/6)
Morecambe v Charlton – Charlton Win (21/20)
