EFL Tips: All Aboard The Orient Express

Gaz looks to get 2022 off to winning ways with this 14/1 EFL accumulator.

The festive period in England is normally heaven for football punters with a plethora of action taking place. Unfortunately the Boxing Day schedule was decimated by COVID related postponements and that trend continued into midweek. Thankfully (so far) the impact on Saturday’s matches looks minimal and hopefully we can start the New Year with a bang.

Forest Green v Stevenage – Sat 1st Jan 15:00 GMT

On paper this looks a mismatch and I think that’s how it will play out in reality. Forest Green have led the way in League Two for most of the season and look a cut above most other teams. Their standards have very rarely slipped and they come into this game with a well rested squad having not played for 3 weeks (11th Dec). There is a risk that prolonged break could have a negative impact but it’s a risk I’m willing to take.

Stevenage are the visitors on Saturday and they face a quick turnaround having played on Wednesday evening. That fixture was away from home at Swindon and it’s a tough ask to backup so quickly against a side like Forest Green. If Rovers take the lead early this could be a rout and with that in mind I’m taking a home win & over 1.5 goals.

Leyton Orient v Bristol Rovers – Sat 1st Jan 15:00 GMT

Similar to Forest Green, Orient come into this game off the back of a nice break. The rest period probably came at a good time for the East Londoners’ as they had lost back to back games prior to that. Overall though their form this season has been solid, particularly at the Leyton Stadium where they have excelled (W6, D3, L2). In those 11 home matches they scored 24 goals and they should be too strong for Bristol Rovers here. Rovers have only won two away games this season (W2, D4, L4) and I don’t see that changing on Saturday.

Hartlepool v Oldham – Sat 1st Jan 15:00 GMT

Oldham featured quite a bit in my bets in 2021 but unfortunately for Latics fans it was because they have been pretty atrocious. Currently bottom of the league and with only 4 wins all season it’s hard to put a positive spin on things. With that in mind it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to guess I’m siding with the home side in this one. Hartlepool’s season has been based on their form at Victoria Park (W7, D2, L2) and they should be too strong for an Oldham side who haven’t won any of their last six matches.

Sutton United v Exeter – Sat 1st Jan 15:00 GMT

I think I’ve got a pretty good handle on both these sides as they have been regulars in my bets this season. Even though I’m up to speed on things, I don’t feel confident predicting the winner as these two look so closely matched. Instead the bet that sticks out is goals. Both sides are decent going forward but also struggle to keep opponents out. Both teams to score looks a nailed on bet at 4/6. Only one of Exeter’s last seventeen matches has ended without both teams scoring while Sutton have also been involved in some goal fests recently. The reverse fixture ended in a 2-0 Exeter win but I think Sutton will get on the scoresheet this time around. Over 2.5 goals is the bet here.
